A Dietrich of the Light

Shanghai Express
1931 Nominee

100 Words
That muse of a woman, Shanghai Lily, played by the incomparable Marlene Dietrich, slinks across the train like a hellcat. Followed closely by her former flame, who keeps time by his heartbeat and a rather significant watch, a handful of lovable passengers make the journey too, from a betting man to a woman with a boarding house to Shanghai Lily’s shadow-like companion. On the backdrop of a civil war, a hostage crisis ensues; will the muse rekindle the dormant romance and be able to win the heart of the doctor for good, or is this love story destined for tragedy?

Somehow it just sounds ‘wrong’ to nickname a golden-haired gal “Shanghai” anything. But, it was the early 30s, after all. We’ve come a long way baby!
