Love, the Heming-Way

A Farewell to Arms
1932 Nominee

100 Words
Love in the time of World War I? That’s a tough one, as any soldier and nurse paired up would tell you if they could tell you, how every attempt at courtship must be forced into one night. The alcoholic soldier and the nurse “in trouble” work hard to make the relationship work for them, but a surgeon-slash-control freak and a skeptical nurse friend and even the rain itself seem to conspire against the almost-happy couple. Wedded at the bedside (at least she’s in white) seems all right at the time, but desertion is a crime and life is short.

Okay, I’m repeating myself – you picked ‘Cavalcade’ not only over history’s most famous king, (Henry VIII), ‘Little Women’, ’42nd St’ but also over: ‘A Farewell to Arms’ with Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes, a story so dear to me – written by one of my favorite authors … I’m stunned. And so – yes – again – I MUST see ‘CAVALCADE.’ It better be good! The current best selling book by Kristin Hannah, ‘The Women’, proves that stories of love, war, soldiers and nurses draw us.
