Dodsworth
1936 Nominee
100 Words
The alternate title is a nod to a book my mother kept that, as children, my friend and I pronounced, “Stop Ugging Now” until that fateful day when she revealed its true pronunciation. We were so clever, weren’t we, figuring out the nuances of the letter G? This isn’t about that. It’s about a young wife and a retired husband rushing off to Europe. Wifey wants to reclaim her youth and that comes with a slew of inappropriate behavior and a portrait of 1930s narcissism. Sam loves his wife, but perhaps without a job, he can finally see her clearly.
