The inspiration for My Fair Lady is the story of a phonetics professor that takes on a student selling flowers on the street whose penchant for use of slang meets the professor as a suitable challenge. The pair engage in a feat of wits that goes beyond words and bleeds into something stronger. Is it problematic for feminism that the implication is that women need to be “tamed” by more seasoned, educated men? The modern man making a “statue” of sorts might win his bet, but can he win the heart and soul of such a fierce specimen as Eliza?
