Goodbye, Mr. Chips
1939 Nominee
100 Words
The man who beat out the man who played Rhett Butler for best actor might resemble the man on the Pringles can and perhaps that’s why they call him Mr. Chips, or…perhaps not. That Robert Donat, he plays an older gentleman quite well who turns up at a school with ambitions to become headmaster. Along the way, he learns about love from a woman on a mountain and about raising children from the thousands of boys who grow to men who go to war. It’s not a bore, although the movie leaves one’s heart more than a little bit sore.
