Lon Chaney Junior is Going to Get You if You Don’t Watch Out

Of Mice and Men
1939 Nominee

100 Words
The alternate title is a throwback to Hollywood Revue; you didn’t see it, but you might have sang it. This is that Steinbeck classic that made you angry in high school. Actually, it’s the first of two of them (stay tuned for 1940). Lennie isn’t bright, but he isn’t crazy – just suggestible. Man or wolf, he isn’t fighting the full moon in this one, but his own strength; the gentle giant might pet a pup one minute and smother it the next. Before he coached Rocky (stay tuned for 1976), George looked out for Lennie and told stories about rabbits.

I’ve commented often on the amateurishness of these early movie posters – the top line of this poster is hilarious. ‘HOLLYWOOD SAID IT COULD NEVER BE MADE BUT NOW IT’S ON THE SCREEN’ Did three blind mice choose this?
