One Foot in Heaven
1941 Nominee
100 Words
Fredric Marching through this story is a surprising pleasure and that’s coming from someone who isn’t exactly the religious type. The lead from Our Town (it’s not Ann Patchett, though she may as well be) marries a doctor-turned-preacher and rearing their children proves challenging through wartimes and wedding bells and going to the movies. Venting about dad’s vocation is the kids’ favorite pastime, but even a man with a troubled heart can find room in his heart parts for the great big beautiful guy in the sky. Even a heathen like me can see the good parts of this one.
