In Which We Serve
1943 Nominee
100 Words
The men aboard the Torrin have their lives torn asunder, under the waves and all the way at home. As the ship is attacked, the men come back to the surface, gasping for air and holding onto fragments of memory. One man remembers his wife, whose choice to stay at home could be fatal. One man remembers meeting Freda on a train and wonders after the welfare of their unborn baby. The Captain thinks of his well-to-do family, a wife and two children, and whether their privileged British upbringing predisposes them to the stiff upper lips so cherished during wartimes.
