Jewish Like Me

Gentleman’s Agreement
1947 Best Picture

100 Words
Gregory Peck plays Phil, a man who poses as Jewish to write some illuminating articles about the nature of anti-Semitism. The idea is compelling, but not bold enough in this backdrop of the 1940s to really sink its teeth into an important topic.
It doesn’t help that Phil’s girlfriend is pretty bland, like a bowl of oatmeal in a pretty dress. There isn’t enough goodness in her to justify his constant return to her, especially when he’s got a kid to raise and an ailing mother. It’s a great idea wrapped in beige paper.
The Best? I disagree this time.

Fast forward your film-viewing then, to watch Gregory Peck play a Nazi in the 1978 film, ‘The Boys from Brazil’. You won’t be disappointed.
