It’s Italy! Everyone is falling in love! Where is the conflict? Where are the nuanced, female characters? They’re not here. Toss a coin in the fountain, as Frank suggests, and see if they’re showing in the next theater. (Probably not). There are moments of tenderness and lines worth writing down, but if you’re looking for a complex, modern love story, it isn’t to be found here. Can someone please explain to me why so many of the films in the 1950s were set in Rome? I could look it up, but I’d rather we discuss it here in the comments.

    So I have read … in the 50s and 60s, the Via Veneto was one of the most famous places on the planet; everyone wanted to go to Rome! And what they found was outrageous behavior after hours, rich playboys, fashion models, all kinds of famous tourists, and Hollywood found a place that “no painted backdrop could replace”. It was the ‘coolest’ place to be; the herds appeared. As for the movie, it sounds as if they just set up a camera and filmed what was going on daily; called it a wrap (and a film).
