Japanese Goodbye

Sayonara
1957 Nominee

100 Words
The son of a four-star general mumbles, generally. Is this when the mumbling started, Marlon? The general is perturbed when he is asked to be the best man at the wedding of his coworker to a Japanese woman in a post-World War II haze of hatred. He is only perturbed until he meets a captivating Japanese dancer and throws out his relationship with an American girl (not the one Tom Petty sang about) to date the pretty dancer. Unfortunately, the military personnel don’t swoon over love stories and soon, the couples have to decide whether their romances can survive racism.

I’m going to give credit where it’s due: they cast an American-born actress of Japanese heritage in the lead role. Finally. As you’ve pointed out, we’ve seen little of this up to now.

Audrey H. turned down the role; probably smart to stay away from THE lo(w)thario

      (though I’d’ve taken it;)
