X-Rated

Midnight Cowboy
1969 Best Picture

100 Words
This movie was rated X. My grandmother loved this movie. My other grandmother loved Paul Newman. I am learning a lot about my grandmothers, neither of whom were anything like Joe’s grandmother in this movie.

Even by today’s (lack of) standards, this movie is pretty eye-opening. It deals with the fluid nature of sexuality and the (gasp) notion that even MEN resort to SEX WORK, sometimes VOLUNTARILY.

Friendly reminder: Women have sex lives. And money.

What else is a dumb hick from Texas supposed to do, become a CEO? Run the country? Actually…he would be an improvement. Joe Buck 2028.

It must have been something about Dustin Hoffman movies, because I recall that this film (as well as The Graduate) were the first times I really remember paying attention to entire soundtracks of movies that weren’t musicals. This was my first glimpse of Jon Voight – I loved him immediately. I’m sad you won’t be seeing him in ‘The Odessa File’ (1974) – such a great film – with a staggering performance by Maximilian Schell no less too – as it was overlooked by the Academy.
