Being a rich Brit in the twentieth century has its ups and major downs, as the Marryots can tell you. Perhaps a little storm cloud follows this family and its rather theatrical matriarch, or perhaps she herself is the little storm cloud. Even the servants lead woeful lives, what with the Boer War taking all the grown men out of the house. As each tumultuous year commences, complete with an on-screen cavalcade (that’s a procession of people on horses) announcing the passage of time, it seems that the family thins out until only two remain to toast another New Year.

    Sounds familiar- families torn apart up by wars.

    Side note: King Kong didn’t get a nomination. Now I understand why Alien didn’t get the award; monsters, so misunderstood 🙂

      Yes! The Best Pick podcast I listen to felt this one was very similar to Cimarron. Worth a listen if you want to hear some very smart film fans discuss Best Picture. ✨

    Haven’t seen it yet; after my posts on the other 1932 nominees, you know I intend to. Therefore, unlike earlier years, where I also hadn’t seen all the nominees, I’m going to hold off on ‘picking’ a fav for 1932 for now. Discipline. I’ve gotta see it; I’ve gotta, considering all the great stories it beat out!
