A Farewell to Arms
1932 Nominee
100 Words
Love in the time of World War I? That’s a tough one, as any soldier and nurse paired up would tell you if they could tell you, how every attempt at courtship must be forced into one night. The alcoholic soldier and the nurse “in trouble” work hard to make the relationship work for them, but a surgeon-slash-control freak and a skeptical nurse friend and even the rain itself seem to conspire against the almost-happy couple. Wedded at the bedside (at least she’s in white) seems all right at the time, but desertion is a crime and life is short.
