Love for Ages

Romeo and Juliet
1936 Nominee

100 Words
A Romeo with a receding hairline and a Juliet a day or two past thirty still make love the way the youth do and make the story work its tragic magic. Certainly, it’s an adaptation more promising than many (and if you think I mean 1935’s travesty, then you are astute, indeed). Montague and Capulet cannot get involved with one another, but the young lovers of the title defy their parentage and take advantage of blossoming romance. Unfortunately, they hardly get a chance to understand what it takes to make a marriage work before the family feud kills the mood.

Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard are a good pair (not Loy-Powell good, but still compelling to watch).

Gee, I wonder why they picked Rathbone to play Tybalt? Sherlock can help me figure it all out.

Basil Rathbone practiced fencing. I think it had to do with the swordfight.
