Yo Ernest

A Tale of Two Cities
1936 Nominee

100 Words
I know the opening line to this tale by heart due to its association with Hey Arnold! Oskar learns how to read but initially pretends to learn to read by memorizing the opening passage of A Tale of Two Cities. Later, he pets a kitty. The same show features an episode in which a kid says that something is after his favorite show, Yo Ernest, which makes Ernest a double of Arnold. Anyway, this double take features Ronald Colman and if I have anything unkind to say it is that the leading man is too kind to play a schmuck.

It was the worst of sighs. I got through the first eight nominees for 1936, and happily thought I was done seeing those ghoulish black/white headshot cutouts of cast members on the movie posters – sigh – but I suppose they’re only fitting for a story that features a guillotine. This was a treasured favorite book of mine as a young girl; sad the movie didn’t move you more.
