Norman Maine the actor catches the eye of the OG Best Actress, but she’s playing an ingénue named Esther. There isn’t much heat between the leads, though Vicki Lester heats up the screen while Norman heats up his seat at the bar and fades into oblivion. Norman gives Esther her big break and when the two run away together, his career runs away while hers takes off; the team of producers/reporters/bartenders can’t keep Norman’s act together and he finds himself drinking more, working less, and causing stress to the couple’s marriage. Is fame worth the price of losing a life?
