A Study in Scarlett

Gone with the Wind

Scarlett O’Hara maybe got what she deserved, but you be the judge of that when you watch this deeply problematic yet beautifully filmed Civil War epic, Readers. Let’s discuss Hattie McDaniel. Hattie stole the show and still had to sit at the back of the room because of the color of her skin on Oscar night and would you believe that in nearly one hundred years, we aren’t doing much better? The old south is dead and it needs to stay that way so that Miss McDaniel can sashay freely in her red petticoat at the front of the room.

It was a Dark Victory for Hattie on Oscar night. My whole childhood, I thought this was the greatest film made up until this point; I’ve since changed my mind, for many reasons. Never the less, I still feel that every American should see this important film to help understand the deeply divided feelings in this country the war brought, that still haven’t healed.
