Is it just me, or were movies about the sea something of a commodity at this point in history? John Wayne is hardly along for the ride and makes a brave if bungled attempt at a Swedish accent. John Ford is at it again with a  story about a group of sailing men who drink too much and gather suspicion about one of the travelers in their midst. A sad journey awaits the well-paid lads. Once they dock, with a few less in stock, the men might understand the sea, but understanding the lay of the land is another matter.

    Wayne:
    “I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that’s what you’re asking. Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.“

    DAMN those selfish Indians… thanks, John, for your wisdom and helping us to understand, and many condone, the genocide of entire tribes of human beings.

    Yay male privilege, here, white male privilege that my generation was raised on and many of us, tainted with, consequently contributing to misery for many, many others: men, women&children, especially the latter.

    John Ford, John Wayne, trump and ilk – bah.

    OMG – I’ve never heard that quote above. As for phony Swedish accents, I’ll take Swedish meatballs anyday.
