Famous Last Word

Citizen Kane
1941 Nominee

100 Words
Can you sum up a man’s life in one word? If so, Rosebud proves a puzzle to the reporters that worked for the imposing CHARLES FOSTER KANE (my roommate and I used to shout this in film school. Was film school worth it? Did I mention I work as a nurse now?). The reporters try to solve a mystery that maybe shouldn’t be one since no one was in the room when CHARLES FOSTER KANE died. It’s worth the hype to this day, to be sure, and what’s more, all the more famous because it lost out on Best Picture.

I have seen this film twice; dark, gloomy, powerful, haunting. I didn’t realize it had lost Best Pic; before checking, I’m going to guess it lost to: How Green Was My Valley. As a young girl, having seen both, I would have picked ‘Valley’ but now, as this film has endured longer, and tells us a hugely important story about USA history (versus a nostalgic, tragic and of course, important Irish history story) I would pick this film for sure.
