Father of Mine

How Green was My Valley
1941 Best Picture

100 Words
One of those winners I’d only ever heard of and though its light dims in the hulking shadow of that film geek go-to Citizen Kane, this one is worth the investment. In the belly of a Welsh mine work several of the Morgans – brothers and father alike. Their tight-knit family is divided by its opinions on the prospect of the formation of a labor union. The littlest Morgan lad recalls his childhood, the love between his older sister and the preacher, the time he and his mother fell through the ice, boxing matches at school, but most importantly his father.

Just hearing the title of this old, beloved film fills me with emotions; seeing the pics on the poster make my heart ache – it was truly, one of the films you couldn’t stop thinking about. Just – WOW! Earlier, I mistakenly called it a film about an Irish fam; I stand corrected: Welsh. And again, years ago I would have picked absolutely as the best pic of that year – but, as you point out – Citizen Kane has endured while this mining story has been buried.
