The Invaders
1942 Nominee
100 Words
Leslie Howard and Laurence Olivier are both in this film for about 15 minutes each, but they’re both brilliant. A group of Nazis escape internment and find the Canadians they encounter to be more cunning and braver than they anticipated. The tension is palpable, setting the precedent for war movies to come. On the cusp of American entry into World War II, this proved to be Leslie Howard’s last film. His plane disappeared with suspected Nazi foul play, but as his character in this movie quips, “Wars may come and wars may go, but art goes on forever.”
Bravo, Leslie.
