The Pride of the Yankees
1942 Nominee
100 Words
A soft spot the size of a baseball occupies my heart as it makes me think of my father. This portrait of Lou Gehrig starring Gary Cooper in my favorite role so far is wholesome and powerful. Overcoming the scrutiny of immigrant parents, Lou managed to win them and the rest of the country over with his sportsmanship and skill. He scored a home run or two for a sick kiddo in Saint Louis. The alternate title is the diagnosis nicknamed Lou Gehrig’s Disease. If you haven’t got time to study it, pour some ice water over your head instead.
