Yankee Doodle Dandy
1942 Nominee
100 Words
I have two cats and the alternate title is one of the many weird things I sing to them. Who knew that George M. Cohan, played by Jimmy Cagney himself, was responsible for the origins of my kitty serenades? The last film in a set of ultra-patriotic films of the year, Yankee Doodle Dandy didn’t assuage my anxiety about the end of World War II still looming, but it provided even more fondness for the lead actor and for the magic of entertainment in times of strife. Those biopics are an Academy favorite and after this one, I understand why.
