A Woman of God

The Song of Bernadette
1943 Nominee

100 Words
The girl saw a vision of The Virgin Mary for 15 days in a row in the grotto. Her story, captured here by the newcomer and Oscar winner Jennifer Jones almost makes a believer out of an atheist as long as that atheist isn’t – THAT’S VINCENT PRICE! AND THE DETECTIVE FROM THE EXORCIST!

Anyway, Bernadette stands by her story until the very end and has to overcome mockery and martyrdom by the locals along with a vindictive nun (What religious tale would be complete without at least one surly nun? None.) Plus, Vincent Price is priceless as the imperial prosecutor.

Nuns in France – Hollywood turned this into a cliche: Joan of Arc, The Singing Nun, (this one: Bernadette) and recently, ‘The Nun’. Madeleine, who lived in an old house in Paris, covered in vines, must have had something to do with this.
