Sunset Boulevard
1950 Nominee
100 Words
This is all about Norma Desmond, who’s ready for her close-up, but not ready to close up shop as a looming starlet. Aging gracelessly, Norma lives in a secluded mansion with a devoted, somber servant and piles of money to spend on animal-print articles of clothing and a monkey. Joe is a struggling writer who falls into Norma’s clutches because of course, she might be aging but she isn’t dead. Joe manages to rekindle his writing when he meets Betty, but you can bet that Norma isn’t going to be cast aside faster than she’s cast in a new picture.
