Well, I was uncomfortable. A Chinese – I mean, Eurasian – doctor is played by a white lady whose name begets her whiteness: Jennifer Jones. It would be really easy to excuse this as another sign of the times, but it was 1955.
My goodness, World War II didn’t do all that much to mature our sensibility as far as Hollywood was concerned, but that might be the town whose biggest boast of all is that it refuses to grow, emotionally or spiritually. The products (some) are lovely and mature, but the people who live there? Less so, by far and wide.
