The King and I
1956 Nominee
100 Words
An English woman travels with her son to Siam to educate the staggering amount of children of the King of Siam, portrayed by Yul Brynner, whose six-pack is possibly responsible for his garnering of the golden boy for Best Actor. There’s even a scene where his chest is covered and he adjusts on-camera to make sure that everybody can see that he works out. While the love story is ham-handed and there’s a literal act-out of Uncle Tom’s Cabin that’s both beautiful and racially problematic, the movie still manages to remind us why the concept of a King is misleading.
