The Sundowners
1960 Nominee
100 Words
A couple of wanderers won’t settle because Dad has a gambling problem, but he’s really good at shearing sheep. While the matriarch and grown son of the family try to convince him to finally settle down somewhere permanent, he grumbles about wandering and then gets drunk and loses money gambling, and then he wins it back shearing sheep. It’s a story about a dysfunctional family set against the backdrop of obsessive, nomadic living.
Like other films from the year, it’s good, but it fades into the background.
Perhaps the cast at the time was the powerful element; otherwise…it’s just fine.
