Hate is for Free in America

West Side Story
1961 Best Picture

100 Words
The Jets and the Sharks snap at each other (literally) in a musical, but ominous, threatening, and masculine fashion. It’s very scary. While they dance at each other menacingly, Maria and Tony fall in love with each other, although they are from opposing sides of the snap, crackle, pop gangs.

As the intensity grows between the Rice Krispies, the heat escalates between Tony and Maria until they commit hanky-panky and other people discover their secret; what they do not discover is that Maria is actually a white lady named Natalie Wood.

It’s based on Romeo and Juliet and real-life racism.

As a young young girl, I loved this – but it was ANITA, who sang that she was gonna ‘get her kicks tonight’ who I really fell in love, and who totally stole the show. (Rita Moreno), and I’m pleased to type that she is from Puerto Rico (bravo Hollywood) and she DID win the oscar for best supporting actress! YEAH – that was the happy ending to this very sad story.
