Blow Me a Kiss, and That’s Lucky Too

Mary Poppins
1964 Nominee

100 Words
Somewhere on an iPhone is a video of me after my brother’s wedding dancing in a too-long dress singing “Chim Chim Cher-ee” because the hem of said dress collected dirt from the outdoor setting of the wedding.

I was drunk (this was a long time ago). My brother was married (this was a long time ago). And yet, the magic of some lunatic witch nanny and her chimney sweep hookup (they were definitely hooking up) is the part I remember best.

The songs hold up; the message of family over capitalism holds up; and for fuck’s sake, VOTES FOR WOMEN.

Because this is considered a children’s film, the genius of the music is overlooked. These songs are magic and brilliant, and will endure long after so many other songs from other musicals die – including others from this same year.
