No Kings, Just McQueen

The Sand Pebbles
1966 Nominee

100 Words
Curses be damned! But…this ship is damned. Ever since Jake came aboard as the new engineer, terrible things have happened to members of the crew – not the least of which is the casual use of racial slurs because the film takes place in the 1920s and it’s Hollywood and it wouldn’t be realistic if at least one character was not completely bigoted. It might as well be the guy everyone thinks is bewitching the ship.

As tensions rise between the Chinese and the Americans, fierce battles rage and somehow, love blossoms.

Surely, Shirley can understand Jake’s misgivings of the heart.
