A Black Guy is Coming to Dinner

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
1967 Nominee

100 Words
Joanna is a bright white optimistic light and frankly, given that this movie is almost 60 years old, she’s a little irritating. Who raised this lady – an alcoholic and his mistress? Wait. Yes.

I think my own parents would be thrilled if I managed to cart home a tall, handsome black man who also happens to be a doctor, but that would require a lot of optimism on my part and I just don’t have that sort of thing lying around. The racial tension problems are addressed by a big speech at the end made by a slurring white guy.

That line: ‘Guess who’s coming to dinner?’ was borrowed a million times in everyday conversations, and by comics, for the next two decades: I kid you not. Did you notice that Katherine Ross’s name doesn’t even appear on the poster? Clearly, she was just a prop for the other three.

OOPS! Her name is on the poster – because I confused Katherine Houghton for Katherine Ross. I guess she won’t be coming to my house for dinner now.
