Consider Yourself Conan O’Brien

Oliver!

Are you mystified by the alternate title? Let’s talk.

I used to obsessively watch Conan O’Brien and loved his 10th Anniversary special. One of the clips involved Conan looking straight into the camera singing a song called “Consider Yourself.”

Fast-forward to my mother bringing home Oliver! From Blockbuster (remember that?) and she professed how much she loved the movie. Dodger starts singing “Consider Yourself” right after sweet Oliver gets the boot and I, her somewhat unhinged daughter, burst into peals of laughter because all I could think about was Conan’s big, silly face staring into the camera singing that song.

Bill Sykes, masterfully played by Oliver Reed, was the single-most terrifying villain I’d ever seen on screen up to that point. I still shudder when I think about being a little kid in that big, dark, theatre, and watching him: Brrrrr! As for you breaking into peals of laughter while the Artful Dodger began his song – I’ll never forget that – I was so – shocked! Still makes me laugh; much about this movie will stay with me forever.
