General Nuisance

Patton, 1970

Patton
1970 Best Picture

100 Words
During World War II, General George S. Patton led the allies to victory, but he was a nuisance the whole time. It’s hard, upon reflection, to separate the performance from the person, given George C. Scott’s gruff demeanor and refusal of his Oscar for this film.

After the general slaps a child, I disconnected from the disconnected general. A brushstroke of empathy outside of him owning a dog might have done some good, but it ultimately won the top prize over more empathetic films like…all of the rest of the nominees this year, save that one about the fucking airplane.

Fast forward to another so called ‘daring’ film where Jack Nicholson states: “You can’t handle the truth.” Oh please. Sorry, but the macho military bravado in movies doesn’t end here.

I clicked on ‘Airport’ where you asked for votes on Best Pic for 1970, thinking it would take me to that page, so I could review your alternate titles lol. Guess I voted for that one! I’ll try to vote again (for M.A.S.H.) and see if it takes. In the meantime …

Best alternate title for 1970 goes to: General Nuissance – with B Flat a close runner up.
