Cruel and Unusual

A Clockwork Orange
1971 Nominee

100 Words
I knew a girl in college who had a borderline frightening obsession with this movie; she might have just had a crush on Malcolm McDowell, though. She also appreciated the fake word, “Eggiwegs,” and on that note, I have to agree with her. What’s for breakfast? Eggiwegs. It’s just better.

There are consequences for messing with the human brain, even if the brain belongs to a less-than human like Alex. Stanley Kubrick directed this, so of course it is dark and strange and will cause a stomach drop like the floor lurched, and that’s why he never won Best Director.

Agreed! Saw in too young – but I have many regrets about it. Discovered Ode to Joy later; no loss there – didn’t need this horror film to introduce it to me. I’m perusing the list of candidates for this year. It’s going to be another tough pick for me – but this one will not be in the running.
