Tradition

Fiddler on the Roof
1971 Nominee

100 Words
Finally, a musical that contains a multitude of songs that I actually remember long after the thing is over; and a movie that’s worth its staggering runtime! It’s hard not to love a story about a dad who is willing to compromise some of his long-held beliefs for the happiness of his three daughters.

On the other hand, if I were a rich man, I would ponder why it seems to (still) be a tradition that over-zealous (and also rich) weirdos think that relocating Jewish people quashes some invisible threat to their over-zealous, rich weirdness. Can we toss that tradition?

I can! If the Godfather makes someone want to be Italian, to belong to a fiercely loyal clan/family, this movie makes one want to be Jewish. The family saga is absolutely perfect, and you’re right – the score was magnificent. We are all still singing these songs!
