Good at Heart

The Diary of Anne Frank
1959 Nominee

100 Words
The diary of a young girl who lived cloistered away with her family and another during World War II was left behind when the family was seized by the Nazis. I thought I knew the story, but I didn’t understand the magic of a little girl’s little world unfolding while unimaginable horrors happened all around her.

We are such funny creatures, that we create tiny tragedies to avoid the context of the big, scary world when everything falls down around us. It’s easy to wonder if the details matter, at the end of the day.

I think it all matters.

With all my fascination with history, I’m embarrassed to admit, I’ve never read this – it unnerves me and I know it will be so painful. I recently visited Auschwitz, but while in Amsterdam, I couldn’t bring myself to enter the Anne Frank house. I guess for me, the small details do matter.
